Arkheologorodok in Focus: Miami in a Hangar

Mayami Import

[Майами Импорт]

Beneath the derelict Institute for Experimental Aeronautics is an utterly cavernous facility, a massive hidden hangar, large enough to comfortably fit multiple tu-160s, strategic bombers with a wing span of a 182 ft. The hangar floor is lined with pull car towing systems and turntables for moving the aircraft onto rail lines for rapid deployment through tunnels to the eastern airfields. From the hangar, there are multiple rail, car, and pedestrian tunnels snaking out into the Underground at large, though many are still sealed behind massive blast doors that refuse to be lifted.

But the Hangar is not abandoned, far from it, it is constantly abuzz with activity, for it is here that the smuggling ring Mayami Import has made its home, and under the wings of aircraft designed to drown a decadent west in flames, a flourishing market place has formed.

Most of the vendors and shoppers that come to the Hangar enter from the surface, which is guarded by a couplle of Toporika Bratva Brodyaga who check to see if anyone attempting entry are either on the black list or the white list. If they're on neither, than they're charged $5 and directed towards a service lift. Upon entering the lift, visitors will begin to descend and are quickly greeted by by a massive network of cat walks and cranes that overlook the Hangar floor. The lift continues further to the Hangar floor where they are greeted by a couple of white leisure suited Mayami Import toughs who insist that all weapons are checked in before allowing any visitors to continue.

There are several entrances into the Hangar from the rest of the Underground with identical weapon checks, though those who enter through are expected to 1/10 of whatever loot they carry through. The advantage here is, of course, the fact that the entryway is safe from any artifact poachers.

Notable Venders
[
Известные продавцы]

Home to vast majority of ephemeral vendors, the MiGs are also home to one permanent stall, Baba Galina's Apothecary [баба галина аптекарь]. A wizened old crone, Baba Galina makes and sells all sorts of herbal remedies, but is also a very talented poisoner. She is a good source for all sorts of botanical and mythical knowledge and is always happy to buy strange plants and fungi found in the underground.

One of her more notable remedies is what she calls nightmareshade, a herbal paste that when placed under the lip will revive any unconscious victim immediately, but awakes them in a state of delirious fear. She's also developed a powder version that can be blown into the faces of the unwary, forcing them to make a morale check to not flee in terror.

A tu-16 brimming with junk is home to Ahmed's Wholesale,  owned a shrewd Tajik who is greatly disliked by the Antiquarians Union due to his completely illegal fencing operation. Here you can find everything from clothes, to books, to records, to the occasional magical item.

In the cramped confines of a sleek Tu-22 varient is Konets Elektroniki [конец электроники] a "recovered" electronics store run by a track-suited Mongolian by the name of  Tsakhiagiin Melschoi. Here you can find components for nearly any kind of electrical device one could imagine (+1 to a single technology roll). He also runs a small electronic repair shop in the back and his repair abilities are legendary. Melschoi is also known to be an avid tinkerer, making modifications for all sorts of devices. He also keeps his ear to the ground for any rumored technological finds in the Underground, as well as developments within more technologically minded factions.

Those giving the Tu-22 a closer look will notice it is still armed with Kh-22P anti-radiation missiles, but also a few unknown variants there off, as well as electronic warfare systems that follow no known patter. Melschoi firmly dissuades those who wish to look further.

Housed inside a Tu-126, Cyberia [киберия] is a bar home to neon lights, thrumming techno and cocktails of everykind. It is also a popular haunt for hackers and businessmen looking for recovered tech, and it's not uncommon for money and tech to change hands here. The taciturn barman, Kola, also sells thumbdrives of hacking software, stolen documents, and other hard to come by info.

Though many electronics were striped out of it long ago, astute observers will note that this early warning aircraft was phased out in 1984, but that several of the components left inside show signs of being far more advanced. Couples with evidence of life support functions and strange insulation raises more questions with few answers to go around.

Beneath the wings of a Tu-128 long range interceptor adorned with Soviet flags and portraits of pre-Gorbachev leaders is Armed Struggle [вооруженная борьба], an arms dealership owned and operated by a Texan transplant everyone calls Comrade Cowboy. An ardent Marxist-Leninist and avid gun nut, Comrade Cowboy is known to gives discounts to those who show themselves to be versed in proper Marxist theory. Otherwise, you can expect reasonably priced Soviet surplus firearms, but also some explosives, incendiary devices, and more exotic collector's items. A competent gunsmith as well, Comrade Cowboy can make modifications and customizations for the discerning buyer.

An unknown variant of the supersonic Tu-144 is home to Chef Mosolov's Gastronom [гастроном], an affordable yet high end restaurant in which Arkheologorodok's greatest chef tries out bold new dishes with every more exotic ingredients before introducing it into his extremely exclusive dining club. The menu is ever changing with only a few constants. It is well knows some of Chef Mosolov's more outre dishes can have noticeable effects, sometimes salubrious, sometimes deleterious, and occasionally fatal. Dishes like those last two don't stay on the menu long though.

Chef Mosolov is also known to pay well for any exotic "meats" recovered from the Underground in good condition, paying $50 per hit dice, and is also known to put up bounties for specific subjects. One of his better known dishes routinely served at Gastronom is his Special Solyanka for $12, with the smertana used within being so rich it clogs the arteries so comprehensively that it stops any bleeding immediately upon consumption

At the center of the Hangar and directly under the control cupola that hangs from its cavernous ceiling is an utter monster of a helicopter. Repainted with pink, red, and orange to mimic a tropical sunset, flanked by fake palm trees, and adorned in neon lights, this repurposed Mil V-12 is now simply called "Mayami," and serves as a social club and cocaine distribution hub for the smugglers of Mayami Import.

It's cavernous holds have been partitioned into a small dance floor and several private rooms, each equipped with elegant couches, mini bars, and karaoke set ups. Here many of the Mayami Import smugglers can be found with their guests and high end call girls, doing copious amounts of cocaine, singing karaoke, and dancing with great intensity to the greatest hits of the 80s. The private rooms are also popular places to negotiate deals. All Mayami Import members and Bratva are allowed free entry, though the later rarely make use of it.

Towards the rear of the massive hangar is a heavily guarded Tu-95. This is the storehouse for Mayami Import's armory, explosives, and cocaine. Next to it is also a Mil Mi-8 military cargo helicopter for holding "special cargo." This area has its own freight elevator for discrete transit.

The Staff
[Сотрудники]

Entoni Dakota [Энтони Дакота], Head Honcho

Founder and head of the smuggling organization Mayami Import, not much is known about Entoni Dakota, if that's even his real name (it almost certainly isn't). He first made a name for himself in Soviet Central Asia as a hangar on to the heroin smuggling routes, but he specialized primarily in American VHS films, cassette tapes, and clothing, which were only slightly less profitable than heroin in late 80s. He rolled into Arkheologorodok in '92, after its status as a closed city was well and truly annulled. He started off moving large amounts of surplus plastic explosives and the like, but seemingly overnight became the first distributor of high quality cocaine in southern Siberia. From there began a meteoric rise of his organization, which he dubbed Mayami Import.

He rarely is seen outside of his base of operations in the control cupola overlooking the entire Hangar, which has been converted to a sumptuous penthouse suit.

Slava [слава]

Released from Dzerzhinsky Prison two months ago, Slava has become a real rising star in Mayami Import, citing the discipline prison life forced him to learn. He's considered a bit of a weirdo by his compatriots for his new found sense of moderation when it comes to cocaine, now preferring bumps to proper lines. Historically, there has been little competition among the ranks due to the general lack of defined roles in Mayami Import beyond the Boss, the Lieutenants, and the Made Guys. Slava has been bucking this trend with his new found ambition and is angling hard for promotion to Lieutenant.

Typical Importers

Mayami Import is a relatively large smuggling operation, and is the only one permitted to operate in Arkheologorodok by the Toporika Bratva. This security hasn't diminished their competency, however, and they are known to have an unparalleled ability to navigate the Underground. The lions share of their income comes from their utter monopoly on high quality cocaine, a drug that has reached almost ritual significance in Mayami Import's culture.

However, because of Mayami Import's enforced monopoly on smuggling and their extensive knowledge of the Underground, they also make quite a bit of money moving artifacts and tech through and out of Arkheologorodok's Underground and to the world abroad, as well as to, well, import high quality foreign goods. The working theory on the street is that they found some sort of experimental aircraft that they fly out of one of the abandoned airfields to the East and store in one of the tunnels leading there from the Hangar, though no one has been able to spot it and the Mayami Import isn't talking.
